Workshop on Data Visualisation
NSHG-PM Data Visualization Workshop
The Data Visualisation Workshop will take place in Copenhagen on June 1–2, 2025. It is a collaboration between NSHG-PM and the NordForsk-funded PreciMENT, and will be led by Cara Thompson (UK), an experienced data visualisation specialist with a background in developing effective and standardized visualisation models for scientific and medical research.
This workshop is designed for researchers and professionals working with complex data, providing practical methods and tools to improve clarity and communication through visual representation. Participants will learn about different types of visualisations, effective use of color and text, and best practices for creating reproducible and standardized figures. Resources for different tools will be signposted as we go. R code snippets will be shared for those who want to reuse them.
The workshop will include hands-on exercises, and participants are encouraged to bring their own data for practical application. The workshop focuses on key principles that can be applied to any tool, with practical exercises using participants’ own data and offering strategies for future projects.
The program consists of three sessions:
- Sunday, 1st of June, 15.00-18.00 (Including short coffee break)
Why should we use dataviz?
What story are we trying to tell?
How can we create intuitive, pleasing, and accessible colour palettes?
What types of graphs should we use for different aspects of our data story? - Monday, 2nd of June, 9.00-12.00 (Including short coffee break)
How can we make the most of text in our visualisations?
What about tables?
What do we need to bear in mind when it comes to ethics in dataviz?
How can we make life easier for our future selves? - Monday, 2nd of June, 19.00-21.00: (Including informal dinner)
Participant flash talks about use of data visualisation in their work
Networking between participants, organisers, and the workshop presenter
During Monday afternoon, workshop participants are invited to join the free NSHG-PM Symposium about AI Opportunities in Nordic Healthcare, organised at the same venue.
The workshop is open to both NSHG-PM members and non-members, with a reduced fee for members. Spaces are limited, and early registration is encouraged. Please read more on how to register for the workshop here.
*Please note that seats for the workshop is limited with a total seats of 50 attendees and is given by first come first served basis.

To get the most out of the workshop
In preparation, it would be helpful for me to look at visualisations that are typical
within the field, if a short representative selection can be compiled.
- Participants should be encouraged to come to the workshop with a graph or a data story in mind; if they have already started building it, even better!
- It would be helpful to arrange for a handful of teaching assistants to assist with troubleshooting and questions about the tasks I will set for participants; if the TAs can be recruited in advance of the workshop, a one hour session with them the week before the workshop would allow me meet them and to pass on key information that will help them in their role.
- The workshop will be tool agnostic, with no coding or dataviz skills prerequisites. It would be ideal, but not essential, for the group of TAs to have experience in the tools that the participants will be using, so that they can help troubleshoot practicalities if necessary.
