NSHG-PM Data Visualization Workshop

The NSHG-PM Data Visualization Workshop will take place in Copenhagen on June 1–2, 2025, and will be led by Cara Thompson (UK), an experienced data visualization specialist with a background in developing effective and standardized visualization models for scientific and medical research. The workshop are a unique opportunity to meet representatives in the field of precision medicine research and implementation.

This workshop is designed for researchers and professionals working with complex data, providing practical methods and tools to improve clarity and communication through visual representation. Participants will learn about different types of visualizations, effective use of color and text, and best practices for creating reproducible and standardized figures. The workshop will include hands-on exercises, and participants are encouraged to bring their own data for practical application.

The program consists of two sessions:

  • Sunday, 1st of June, 15.00-18.00: Dataviz workshop (part 1) by Cara Thompson
  • Monday, 2nd of June, 9.00-12.00: Dataviz workshop (part 2) by Cara Thompson

In addition, participants are invited to join the NSHG-PM Symposium on the afternoon of June 2, followed by an evening networking session with informal presentations. Please read more and register for the scientific symposium here.

The workshop is open to both NSHG-PM members and non-members, with a reduced fee for members. Spaces are limited, and early registration is encouraged.

NSHG-PM Workshop on Dataviz: Session 2

Session 2 of the NSHG-PM 2025 Workshop on Dataviz wil take place on Monday, June 2nd, 2025 and will be led by Cara Thompsen.

The Workshop will cover the follwing topics:

  • How can we make the most of text in our visualisations?
  • What about tables?
  • What do we need to bear in mind when it comes to ethics in dataviz?
  • How can we make life easier for our future selves?

NSHG-PM Workshop on Dataviz: Session 1

Session 1 of the NSHG-PM 2025 Workshop on Dataviz wil take place on Sunday, June 1st, 2025 and will be led by Cara Thompsen.

The Workshop will cover the follwing topics:

  • Why should we use dataviz?
  • What story are we trying to tell?
  • How can we create intuitive, pleasing and accessible colour palettes?
  • What types of graphs should we use for different aspects of our data story?

To get the most out of the workshop

In preparation, it would be helpful for me to look at visualisations that are typical
within the field, if a short representative selection can be compiled.

  • Participants should be encouraged to come to the workshop with a graph or a data story in mind; if they have already started building it, even better!
  • It would be helpful to arrange for a handful of teaching assistants to assist with troubleshooting and questions about the tasks I will set for participants; if the TAs can be recruited in advance of the workshop, a one hour session with them the week before the workshop would allow me meet them and to pass on key information that will help them in their role.
  • The workshop will be tool agnostic, with no coding or dataviz skills prerequisites. It would be ideal, but not essential, for the group of TAs to have experience in the tools that the participants will be using, so that they can help troubleshoot practicalities if necessary.
